Secure any/all available materials/equipment involved after the athlete has been transported.  Accurately Document the event and obtain statements from witnesses to be added to the accident report.
The athletic director or head coach, if AD is not present, should call the athlete’s parents to let them know what happened and arrange transportation to the hospital.
The Catastrophic Incident Management Team (CIMT) team should now be notified of what happened.
The school’s Insurance carrier should be notified.
One (1) individual should be designated as the spokesperson for the incident. This person will inform the media of the accident.
Medical specifics should only be given with permission of the family and only by the team physician.
Media briefings should be on a broad basis. No individual interviews should be granted.
Student-athletes should be given a prepared response in the event they are questioned by the media. An example would be, “I am hoping for the best and wish my teammate well.”
Set up meetings with players and coaches to discuss the accident and talk about dealing with the media, personal feelings, etc.
Respect the dignity of the individuals involved.  Make sure the family has up-to-date information at all times.
